A Rose City Podcast; a place for all your Thorns, Timbers and 107IST news along with some stories of our club and culture’s history plus a look into the future of soccer support in Portland (Oregon). Hello and welcome to Onward! A Rose City Podcast. This is episode 97 recorded on July 25, 2025 and this is Brian. In Thorns news The Thorns announced on July 23 that midfielder Naomi Powell has signed a short term contract through August 2025. Powell will be Wednesday, July 23 and the Seattle Rain on Saturday, July 26. Also on Wednesday, July 23, in the first of two friendly matches to be played as part of RAJ Sports Epicenter Week, the Thorns beat Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds 32 in a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 in regulation. The Thorns struck first in the 16th minute when forward Reilyn Turner chipped the keeper to give the Thorns the lead. After the halftime break, Urawa's Mei Shimada scored the equalizer to bring the Red Diamonds back into the match in the 49th minute. Regulation ended tied one to one. Portland forward Pietra Tordin scored what would be the winning penalty for the Thorns and Urawa’s Reina Nagashima sent the final shot over the crossbar, sealing the Thorns win. Notes on the match Three Thorns Academy players played in the match. Defender Lily Yakel, who's 14, defender Juliet Twemlow, who's 15 and midfielder Shaylie Haij 16. Yakel and Haij entered the match in the 35th minute with Twemlow entering in the 79th minute. Once again on July 23, the Thorns announced that Portland Thorns legend Christine Sinclair will become the first Thorns player inducted into the Thorns hall of Fame during a ceremony held on Saturday, October 4th at Providence park before the Thorns match against Bay FC. This will be a match not to miss. And once again Sinc makes history. In Timbers news on a celebratory night of the club's 50th anniversary. Midfielder Omir Fernandez, who subbed into the match only six minutes before, scored his first ever goal for the Portland Timbers in the 92nd minute to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw against Minnesota United on Saturday, July 19. Prior to the match, the Timbers army unveiled the largest most of the west side and had elements sprinkled throughout the east side with a 1975 banner and the south end with a presentation of roses. It was a full 360 degrees of storytelling that celebrated the Timbers and Soccer City USA's long history in North America. The west side covered the earlier years of the team's history with Clive Charles, a Timbers all time 11 selection and ring of Honor member prominent along Graham Day celebrating a Peter Withe goal on the left side of the tifo. Vic Crowe, the team's first head coach in the NASL also was featured along with an original NASL team crest. The right side of the west side tifo covered the team's United Soccer League or USL history with former Japanese international and World cup veteran Takayuki Suzuki juggling the ball as well as Brian Alvarez, the team's USL all time top scorer with Alan Gordon, Hugo Alcarez-Cuellar and Brian Winters. Centrally on this mural was also a picture of the MLS era Great and all time 11 member Jack Jewsbury, bandaged and bleeding from a match showing his full commitment to the club. Above him is a statement presented in a newsprint inspired design from the Portland Paper of Record Oregonian that said a history etched into the heart of the city. Running along the north end was an enormous sail of a tifo comprising of the team's modern era. A future built by those who transcend into legends was printed along the top with a crest like feature in the middle comprising of crossed axes, a rose, the years 1975-2025 City of Portland flag elements as well as Cascadia flag elements. Players representing the MLS era include all time 11 members Diego Valery, Sebastián Blanco, Fernando Adi and Liam Ridgewell on the left along with all time 11 and current player Diego Chara prominently on the right with MLS cup winning teammates Alvas Powell, Darlington Nagbe, another all time 11 player plus Lucas Melano and George Fochive. This tifo was and is so wonderful. Congratulations and thank you to all that helped design, paint, pull and all the various jobs that went into displaying this tifo. David Da Costa had to bow out of the All Star game due to his injury which was a big bummer. Messi and another Miami player just didn't show up and were fined a one match ban. I'm totally shocked that Garber didn't bend the rules for Messi. Seems like he was heartbroken to have to ban Messi for one match for not following the rules. Then finally in shrewd business skills like move, the Timbers acquired a 2025 international roster spot from Inter Miami FC for $135,000 in General Allocation Money or GAM. This is most likely the same spot the Timbers sent to Inter Miami on 04-18-2025 for $270,000 in GAM. Granted, it's half the cost for half a season, but still, 135k in Garber Bucks is 135k in Garber Bucks. Help needed. Raffle. Euro Watch Party.
